Camo and Floral

A few days ago, while I was brainstorming what to write for my common app essay, I started thinking about what I wanted to do in the future. I thought I wanted to major in business administration (for maybe a year now) and I've been looking mostly at colleges that have business programs, but I don't know if that's what I want to do.

Then while I was getting ready to go to sleep yesterday, the words "software developer" just popped up in my mind. But it's so weird because I was really tired so I have no idea where that came from. (I guess I think more clearly at midnight?) So anyway, i'm still trying to brainstorm possible directions I can head in :) I know i'm probably not going to know exactly what I'll do, but I still like having a general idea so I don't feel so lost while i'm applying to schools.

How did you figure out what you want to do?

Oh and I've been taking my own photos for a few posts now and I gotta say, it's so much less awkward to take pictures in public places when I take it myself because when people ask what i'm doing, I can just say that it's for photography class! :)

  1. Best pattern combo EVER! Just pinned:) Thanks for the AMAZING style inspiration...as always!!
Ohh man, I totally remember trying to figure out what I wanted to do before college. It's stressful! As soon as senior year rolled around, all anyone wanted to talk about was A)Where I was going to college and B)What my career choice was. I have always known I wanted to be a teacher, but when it came to actually making the decision, I was nervous and ridiculously indecisive. Fashion has always been my other love (obvi!), but after thinking about it forever and ever I knew that I would have to go to school out of state and find permanent residence out of state after school to be successful. This wasn't something I was willing to do as I'm a total family girl and knew I could never leave Washington. Therefore, teaching it was:) I am so happy with my choice of career as I love kids and love being in the classroom. It is definitely my passion! If I have to give you any advice, I would say follow your heart and stick to your passions. Also, don't be afraid to change majors! I knew SO many kids who changed while in college...It may mean you are there a little longer, but you want to make sure you are going to be happy later in life! You are such a smart and talented girl, Joyce! I have no doubt that whatever career path you choose, you will be immensely successful!!!!

  2. Taking your own photos can be quite liberating! I enjoyed it, but just have my husband do it now. It's goes quicker! LOL. Love the camo and florals together. I need to remember that for an outfit! :)

The best piece of advice I can give you for college, is that it's OKAY to not know what you want to do. I wish someone had told me that because I had no idea what I wanted to do in college or for the rest of my life (who does at 17 years old?). And I ended up going to college for 5 years to work for 2 and then go back to school to get a license in something else. Can you imagine if I had just waited and figured out what I wanted to do? Wouldn't have been so much money and time wasted!

If you want to have a focus for just choosing a college, I would look at their class schedule and extra-curriculars. The extra-curriculars can be taken in your first two years, and can help you figure out what might interest you. I had no idea I would love Earth science so much until I took a Geology class and then I seriously considered switching my major to Geology! So you just never know what you may fall in love with. :)

  4. I thought I knew what I wanted to do after high school. Well, I thought I knew what I DIDN'T want to do... Anyway, I decided to study law, which is a pretty safe choice here in the Netherlands. Loads of people choose law because they don't really know what else to do. In the end, after three years, I decided it wasn't for me, and I quit. I then started my bachelor's in Communication Science and absolutely loved it. I never realized I liked bèta-science courses as much, but I did. I will be starting my master's in Health Promotion in September and I'm pretty sure this is my calling. So it only took me 7 years to figure that one out :P

Good luck with making your decision. And just remember, your first decision doesn't necessarily be your final decision :)

  8. You look so cute and I'm all about taking my own photos, it's so freeing! As for what to study, don't stress too much, you've got time! You freshman year is pretty much gen. Eds. Just like high school. I knew I wanted to teach early on, but I think there is way too much pressure to figure out your whole life at 17. Anyway, it's ok not to know.

  9. Thank you for your comment!

Great mixing of prints. Who knew camo and floral would go so well together?! Also I decided what I wanted to do at 14 at a careers fair. They're really good because you get to meet people who actually work in the industry xx

  10. Hi Joyce, what a great combination of florals and camo print, the jeans are too cute. I always knew i was going to study fashion as a secondary but didn't know what i wanted to study first until I went to Uni. Maybe try one of those online career tests, they are based on answering a few questions based on your likes and abilities. Good Luck!

  11. I'm a social worker and I knew since HS that I wanted to be in the helping field. But it's totally okay if you're not sure yet what you want to do...you don't need to have it all figured out just yet :)

  13. I think that you should just look into things that sound interesting for you right now. And hey, if software developer popped up in your head, maybe it would be something to look into! You can always search to see what types of jobs you'd end up with if you went with that. I honestly don't know what to say! I just knew I always wanted to do something artsy, so I guess in that aspect I'm lucky for knowing... but at the same time, I worry about what kind of job I'll end up with (if I do, haha!). When you take classes your first and second years, you'll realize which ones interest you the most, which will hopefully push you toward your decision. :)

On the outfit side, I looooooove how you put together camo and floral! What! This looks so good.

  14. love those patterns together! I think SO many go into college not being sure what they want to do! you will figure it out and so many people change their minds throughout college too :)

  15. Love the double dose of prints! It's an interesting change to see camo that isn't paired as an edgy look.

  18. Best piece of advice I got before college: You don't have to figure it all out beforehand. College is a journey itself.

Basically the person telling me that was telling me that I was probably going to change my major 3 times like I have. I think it's a maturity that comes with age that tells you what you really want to do. College is a place to discover your niche in the real world. So don't sweat it, girl!

By the way, I love these two patterns. Everyone always thinks things have to match, but I don't, & you perfectly showed that with your outfit! So cute!

  22. i quite enjoy taking my own photos, i discover a lot about what faces look good. haha. About knowing what you want to do, i don't think you have to decide, you can do one course or degree, but after you always have the opportunities to change. I totally feel into English teaching, but i love it.

    glorious mixing of prints! xo

  24. Love the grey tee and floral jeans! :)

It's tricky deciding what you want to study! The best thing you can do is find someone who is doing something that you like and ask them how they started, and if they have any tips for you :)

    Good luck!

  26. wow, those two prints look so good together! so different but so well matching at the same time. and a bit autumn'ish too, to be honest ;) oh and you're doing a nice job with those photos, Joyce! photography class is a good reason indeed, hehe.
but how did I pick my specialty? well, I wanted something in a particular town, that was one thing. and the other thing, I thought something nature-related would be pretty cool. and then I chose environmental technology that was not always interesting but there were times when it was really interesting! ;) good luck with making up your mind, Joyce!

  27. We are in the same boat with college!!! I am going to be a senior in the fall and I just finished my common app essay. I wrote it on my biggest passion--photography, and how that's brought me closer to my brother. I am so excited for college and maybe this is weird but i'm even excited to write supplements! I like to write though lol I want to be an English major :) Like you I have no idea what's gonna happen in my life. I don't know what I want to do just that I want writing to be a part of it--so I'm gonna major in English. Let's get through this together my friend!! :)

  28. First of all... i've always admired your sense of style mostly while pairing patterns. This post is the perfect prove of it.

I found so weird that being a fashion blogger you didn't think about the option of something fashion related...hahha i'm used to see that in all the girls. software developer sounds exciting!!! dont have any fear while picking!

  29. I love your shoes and your lovely pants! As for figuring out what I wanted to do...it came down to the fact that I want to be able to do a bit of everything! (And by a bit, I really mean I'd like to literally do everything, but since I have to accept that I'm human and can't, I've gone with business/marketing stuff, which is the most versatile thing I can think of (especially when paired with lots of languages)). Basically I just want to be able to get involved with absolutely anything that catches my interest, and no single field will be likely to hold my attention for an ENTIRE LIFETIME, so... I also figured businessy stuff would be good since I'd like to be able to run my own company/companies at some point, since I think that might be demanding enough to keep me focused for quite a while. (Especially if it's multiple companies doing lots of different things...) I know that working at one thing or field is kind of standard/expected even now, but things get too dull and predictable for me when I stick to just one thing. Also, you might've come across it when researching, but if you're hesitant about scrapping the business stuff entirely, I'd recommend Case Western (okay shh yes I'm shamelessly plugging my uni, but it's got pretty good programs for business and all the computer things like software/hardware stuff, as well as engineering and biomedical stuff. Literally the only thing it sucks for is anyone who wants to major in history or film. Plus they usually let you apply free on the Common App). Anyways, good luck!

ps: also it's really weird to see someone about to begin all the crazy I was dealing with two years ago... College is not as scary or life-defining as it seems, and you can always change things when you're there. You will find things you didn't know you cared about and realize you don't give a damn about things you thought you did care about. I hope you enjoy it (and in the meantime, that college doesn't eat too much of your life before you're there, because senior year's kind of awesome usually!)
